Caring for your tubers & cuttings
Thank you for purchasing a dahlia tuber or cutting from our flower farm.
-
If you bought a tuber start, please give it light watering and keep it in a sunny location. You can water a cutting more thoroughly.
-
Keep your plant in a sunny INDOOR location on a windowsill or under a grow light until the ground is frost-free. For Seacoast, NH this is usually mid-May but you can watch the 10-day forecast to see if this occurs earlier.
-
Dahlias need to be hardened off get them used to living outdoors. This is a gradual 1-to-2-week process of gradually exposing them to sunlight and wind a few hours a day and slowly adding more time each day. Start them in full shade regardless of what they need to grow and gradually move them into sunnier locations.
-
When your dahlia plant reaches 12 inches you should pinch the center stem (wiggle it out of the stem or cut it with fine pruning scissors). This will encourage more blooms on your plant and keep it healthier and more robust.
-
I like to stake my dahlias with 36-48" bamboo stakes. I use little clip ties to keep the plant growing straight and tall. Links below for both of these on Amazon.
